beat the Detroit Tigers by the score of 10 to 5.
 
Surhoff made sure the Baltimore fans enjoyed themselves.  He smashed a
solo-shot out of the park in the 1st inning and electrified the crowd with a
Grand Slam home run in the 2nd inning.  Baltimore won despite being out-hit
by Detroit 14 hits to 9.  
 
The win was credited to Mike Mussina(2-0) who went 6 innings allowing 4 runs.
Mussina got help from Sidney Ponson who was credited with his 1st save.
Justin Thompson(1-1) was given the loss.  He served up 3 gopher balls in 4
and 2/3 innings.

game at Wrigley Field.  The final score was the Montreal Expos 9, the Chicago
(NL) Cubs 8.
 
Montreal erupted with the game winning runs in the 8th inning scoring 2 runs
on 2 base hits.  After an out was recorded, F.P. Santangelo opened up the
rally as he doubled.  Vladimir Guerrero followed next and he smashed a
two-run homer.  Chicago (NL) made it exciting in the 9th, but they were
unable to push the needed runs across.  
 
Anthony Telford(1-1) was the winner allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Ugueth Urbina
recorded the save, his 1st.  The losing pitcher was Amaury Telemaco(0-1) in
relief.

by Mike Piazza who silenced the crowd when he launched a three-run homer.
Los Angeles had 9 hits for the game and Cincinnati had 6.  
 
Mike Remlinger(0-2) absorbed the loss.  He allowed 4 runs and 5 hits in 6
innings.

At Busch Stadium, the St. Louis faithful were treated to an intriguing
pitcher's duel.  Todd Stottlemyre(1-0) finally bested his San Diego
counterpart, Kevin Brown(1-1), by the score of 3 to 0.
 
St. Louis scored all of the necessary runs in the 8th inning plating 3 runs
using 5 hits.  Delino Deshields started the inning off right when he doubled.
After an out was recorded, Mark McGwire came to the plate and lashed a
single bringing in a run.  McGwire took second on the throw.  After another
out, Brian Jordan then banged out a one-base hit scoring one more run.  John
Mabry followed next and he lined a base-hit.  Tom Lampkin came up to bat and
slapped a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning.  St. Louis had 13
hits for the afternoon while San Diego had 3.  
 
Juan Acevedo earned the save, his 2nd.  Brown was given the loss.  He pitched
7 and 2/3 innings giving up 12 hits and no walks.

Phillies topped the Atlanta Braves by the slimmest of margins, 6 to
5.
 
Atlanta found themselves trailing quickly as the Philadelphia bats came
through in the first inning scoring 3 runners on 4 hits.  Atlanta threatened
in the 9th but Philadelphia was able to put down the rally.  
 
The victory went to Curt Schilling(2-0) who went 8 innings, allowing 3 runs.
Mark Leiter earned his 4th save.  Greg Maddux(1-1) ended up with the loss.
He was knocked around by Philadelphia, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 5
innings.

had 6 base hits.  The key at-bat was by Manny Ramirez who deflated the crowd
as he smashed a two-run homer.  Cleveland had 16 hits for the afternoon while
