Athletics defeated the Boston Red Sox by the score of 7 to 4 at UMAX
Coliseum.
 
Oakland came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning as they
scored 6 runs on 6 base hits.  The highlight belonged to Jason Giambi who
elicited a roar from the hometown fans when he clubbed a two-run home run.
Oakland out-hit Boston for the game, 9 hits to 6.  
 
The win was credited to Mike Mohler(1-0) who went 1 inning allowing no runs.
Mohler got help from Billy Taylor who earned his 1st save.  Dennis
Eckersley(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.  He pitched 1/3 of an
inning allowing 5 hits and 1 walk.
