WEB GEMS- Top 9th: Brian Jordan robbed Carlos Hernandez of an extra base hit.
At Busch Stadium, the St. Louis faithful were treated to an intriguing
pitcher's duel. Todd Stottlemyre(1-0) finally bested his San Diego
counterpart, Kevin Brown(1-1), by the score of 3 to 0.
St. Louis scored all of the necessary runs in the 8th inning plating 3 runs
using 5 hits. Delino Deshields started the inning off right when he doubled.
After an out was recorded, Mark McGwire came to the plate and lashed a
single bringing in a run. McGwire took second on the throw. After another
out, Brian Jordan then banged out a one-base hit scoring one more run. John
Mabry followed next and he lined a base-hit. Tom Lampkin came up to bat and
slapped a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. St. Louis had 13
hits for the afternoon while San Diego had 3.
Juan Acevedo earned the save, his 2nd. Brown was given the loss. He pitched
7 and 2/3 innings giving up 12 hits and no walks.
