Greg Vaughn blasted a homerun as the San Diego Padres outscored the Cincinnati
Reds 3 to 2.
 
San Diego won the game with a run in the top of the 8th inning.  Quilvio Veras
drew a walk.  Steve Finley stepped into the batter's box and he delivered a
one-base hit.  Tony Gwynn then stroked a single scoring the run.  Trevor
Hoffman was perfect in the ninth giving him his 1st save on the season.
 
Sterling Hitchcock(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Stan
Belinda(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief.  He surrendered 2 hits and 1
walk in 2 innings.
